GRAND PIER OWNERS AWARDED MBE
Weston-super-Mare Grand Pier owners, brother and sister Kerry Michael and Michelle Michael have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Both Kerry and Michelle have been awarded the MBE for services to the restoration of the Grand Pier after the devastating fire of July 2008.
Kerry Michael said:
To be recognised and honoured for our work in re-building the Grand Pier is very humbling and was completely unexpected. After the fire the main aim was to get the Grand Pier up and running as soon as possible. It is an iconic landmark and has huge importantance for the whole town.
This fantastic honour is recognition for everyone who was involved in the design, building and re-opening of the Grand Pier in record time and we are delighted to be going to The Palace to collect this honour on their behalf.
I would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone involved as well as our family and friends who have supported us throughout.

Congratulations on a thoroughly well deserved award for taking the risk that most other entrepeneurs would have shied well away from and creating one of the world’s best seaside piers from the ashes of the disastrous fire that all but destroyed Weston’s greatest tourist attraction.
