Susana, 37 and Ricardo, 33, met on the island of Madeira thirteen years ago while Susana was working as a karaoke DJ and Ricardo was visiting from England. The couple shared an instant connection and after some time Susana decided to move to England to be with Ricardo, where they set up home and eventually had two children. After many happy years together, the pair chose the Grand Pier to celebrate their special day in April 2017.
Ricardo proposed to Susana a total of three times!
Ricardo asked Susana to marry him over dinner the first time. Although Susana said yes he decided to give her an even better proposal, so Ricardo got down on one knee by the jewellery stand in a shopping centre and presented her with a ring he had just collected. Although Susana said yes a second time, a busy life meant that the wedding plans were postponed. Many years later and after having two children together, Ricardo proposed for the third and final time. Ricardo called Susana into the living room of their home in Bristol where he had arranged for a video of himself singing Marry Me by Train to be played on the television.
The couple have always found the ocean calming and particularly liked the sophisticated and magical feel of the Pier. When the couple first moved to Bristol, they took their children for a trip to Weston-super-Mare. They enjoyed afternoon tea at Tiffany’s and Susana expressed her wish that if she ever got married, it would be at the Grand Pier.
The big day
Susana and Ricardo wanted their special day to represent their journey as a couple; so many of the details had a lot of meaning for them. Their love of musicals was expressed through the table names and their romantic side was expressed through their choice of 1940’s replica car and elegant centrepieces of gypsophila flowers. Susana’s bouquet was filled with sentimental touches; it was made of eucalyptus and rosemary, which are grown in her homeland of Madeira, and finished with lockets with photos of Susana’s late grandparents.
As the couple met in a karaoke bar, it was vital that this was incorporated into their big day. In the evening the guests enjoyed a DJ and karaoke, both cultures merged and guests were entertained with Portuguese, Latino and English music.
The guests enjoyed an amazing well-prepared and presented banquet, which was so good many had second helpings.
The day ended perfectly with the couple strolling down the Pier taking in the seaside views and enjoying an enchanting sunset.
Thoughts from the happy couple
“Every single person that came enjoyed it. A lot of people couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. The team are incredible! They will never let you feel that you’re a burden (something we experienced elsewhere) and no query is too small, or too big. I honestly don’t think we would have pulled it off without that wonderful team.”
