Pier’s Bank Holiday boomtime in numbers

Wednesday 28th August

Britain’s hottest August Bank Holiday on record saw thousands upon thousands of visitors pour onto the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare for some fun in the sun, some shade and cooling refreshment.

Sunday and Monday were the busiest two days of the year so far for the popular attraction as the nation basked under the scorching summer sunshine.

Some statistics from the seafront landmark help to show just how busy it was.

On Sunday and Monday alone, the Pier sold:

  • 4,967 cold drinks
  • 5,149 ice creams
  • The number of 2p coins used by customers over the two days weighed a total of 5.25 tonnes.

The Grand Pier’s General Manager, Tim Moyle, said: “The August Bank Holiday is traditionally a very busy weekend for us, but the weather plays a huge part in determining just how busy we will be.

“Being the hottest on record, it’s no surprise that we had our busiest days of the year over the weekend as thousands of people came to the seaside.

“The Pier offers the best of both worlds, because we have plenty of areas where people can sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.

“Meanwhile those who found the heat a bit too much, particularly during the warmest part of the days, could seek refuse and shade inside the Pavilion, where they could enjoy the huge variety of rides and attractions on offer.

“We had 168 people attend our second summer slime workshop, where they enjoyed a whole host of fun scientific experiments before getting to grips with some goo.

“The weather also meant it was an extremely busy period for our kiosks, too, with thousands of people trying to help cool themselves down with ice creams and cold drinks.

“We ensured we were well-stocked for the weekend, and fully prepared to help our guests chill out when they needed to.

“We’ve had a really good summer here at the Pier and, of course, it isn’t over yet.

“There’s still over a week to go until many youngsters return to school, so plenty of time to enjoy some late-summer family fun at the Pier before the holidays are over.”
