Pier’s plea to help turn tickets to wishes

Wednesday 30th October

Visitors to Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier are being encouraged to spread a little ray of sunshine by turning any unused or unwanted prize tickets into wishes.

The seafront attraction is supporting the national Tickets2wishes campaign which raises money to help grant a magical wish to a child living with a serious or life-limiting illness.

The British Amusement Catering Trade Association (Bacta) has been encouraging its seaside members to adopt the scheme, which invites people to donate unwanted redemption tickets that they win from some of the many games and machines in the arcade.

A special container has been installed in the Grand Pier’s Prize Shop where people can deposit any unwanted or unused prize tickets.

Every three months, the tickets will be counted up and the Grand Pier will donate the value of them to the Bacta-backed charity, Rays of Sunshine.

The Pier’s first donation, which totalled £250, was made last week.

Rays of Sunshine was formed in 2003. It aims to brighten the lives of children aged between three and 18 all over the UK who are living with serious or life-limiting conditions.

Children are invited to think of a wish and an application is completed on their behalf which goes to an appeals committee, and then the wish can be granted and turned into a happy memory, giving the child and their family an unforgettable experience and a welcome break from the daily routine of medication and hospital appointments.

The charity has granted all sorts of wishes for deserving children, from meeting favourite celebrities, like magician Dynamo and World F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, to having an electric wheelchair wrapped by a celebrity supercar customiser.

Tim Moyle, General Manager of the Grand Pier, said: “Guests enjoy the challenge of collecting as many tickets as possible from the games and arcades here at the pier, and at the end of their visit, they are rewarded with their choice of prizes from the Prize Shop.”

“Our prizes require varying amounts of prize tickets and there are often a few left over, so we’re delighted to be able to offer this as a wonderful alternative.”

“And for many of our guests, they have just as much fun playing the games as they do from the amount of tickets they win, so we’re now giving them the option to donate their tickets, in the knowledge that they will be helping to put a smile on the face of someone who could really use one.”

“It’s the best of both worlds, the feeling of being a winner at the machines as well as the satisfaction of spreading a ray of sunshine to someone less fortunate than yourself.”
