On Tuesday 15th October, The Grand Pier will light up pink and blue in the evening for the Wave of Light, joining several iconic Somerset buildings in showing support for those who have experienced baby loss. This is in collaboration with local charity Towards Tomorrow Together, find out more here.
Our Queen of the machines smashes going back to school
Being a mum of school aged children, it is always going to be hard to juggle work, schools, kids sports clubs and family life. Working at the Grand Pier on a part time basis with supportive management has enabled me to be able to do this stress free.
Jo commented, “I can work school hours during term time, have my set college days off and extra time for my exam studies. This allows me a perfect work/study, family life. I can still earn money AND study to progress my career.”
Jo has worked at the Grand Pier on and off (due to mum responsibilities, life and of course Covid) since April 2013, and is now one of our senior arcade attendants.
It’s been a cracking year for Jo, not only has she passed two papers for GCSE English and also earned a distinction for her English speaking and listening exam. But she has completed and passed all three functional skills Maths Exams (two papers on each). Furthermore Jo earned a level 3 GCSE Maths (narrowly missing out on a 4).
After gaining her results Jo exclaimed, “At 40 years old I have shown anything is possible, and with the encouragement and support from my employers, I have completed my GCSES this school year and now going forward to complete my Diploma in the coming academic year.”
So what next for our super mum? Are you finished now? “Nope! This is not the end! I start my diploma in nursing and midwifery in September and I will retake my Maths GCSE in November. Watch this space!” replied Jo.
Paul Charalambous, Grand Pier Director said, “We are all so very proud of Jo’s accomplishments over this academic year and will obviously continue to support her on her upcoming courses.”
Jo concluded “If you are a parent wanting to go back to school but cannot find an employer to give you the understanding for education and the part time hours needed, the Grand Pier is the first place to join.”
